2000 ML 430 (V8) is misfiring and nobody seems to know why (been to 3 shops so far). Misfires at idle and low speeds, runs fine at highway speeds.

Plugs have been replaced, injectors have been refurbished, and the shops that have looked at it say the coils, distributor, and plug wires are all of (but I am not entirely confident in those assessments since one guy wanted charge me R100k to replace the engine rather than seek the source of the misfire!). I have a strong feeling it is a bad coil (as I have had two other cars behave this way and both times it was a coil) but am also thinking it could be the EGR valve or engine timing but don't have the ability to check for myself.

The car has 300+kms on it and is in good running condition with the exception of needing a top-end job (rings are bad--but fouled plugs as a source of this problem has been ruled out). Whoever is able to diagnose and repair this misfire will be the favoured candidate for doing the top end job and subsequent maintenance on the beast, which we plan to keep for at least another 3 years.
